Possible copying of content to Wikipedia
According to the stated GNU Free Documentation License 1.2, it would appear that (valid) content may be copied across to other projects, e.g. Wikipedia. The license there is Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License. Such copying may be useful in some areas, particularly creating (currently non-existent) articles for notable subjects.
- No original research should be included at Wikipedia, but copying of text would allow greater access to the material, providing a wide audience of editors to potentially find and include citations from reliable sources
- Contributors to such articles here should ideally be notified - this could be done by placing messages on their respective talk pages
- There may also be some scope to copy non-free screenshots, e.g. Space Invaders gameplay screenshot.png, which would save time compared to recreating them for Wikipedia
I've been aware of BeebWiki for a while, but TBH don't know a great deal about it. Please note that my comments above are not in any way intended to "steal" content from here, but to give it a wider audience. Exported content could refer back to http://beebwiki.jonripley.com (and principal authors) in the edit summaries there. (And if this wiki itself has been the subject of some media reporting, then there's scope for an actual article about it on Wikipedia.) Thanks for reading. -- Trevj 11:41, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
- As a Wikipedian (Regregex) I approve of bringing content across in this way, in principle. I don't know whether anything I've written here counts as notable, well-attested or 'encyclopedic' according to Wikipedia policy but if you see a promising article it's well worth a try. – beardo 01:35, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
Combating Vandalism
I recently seem to be spending more time deleting vandalism that actually writing new content. Jon and I have persued various methods of automatically preventing spammers from registering with the BeebWiki, but we may be being forced down the path of having vet people before allowing them to create or edit any entries. This would nessessarily be a manual process by either me or Jon.
The simplest thing to do would probably be to insist that a BeebWiki author has previously been active on the BBC Mailing List, and that they identify who they are in the registration process by refering to who they are on the Mailing List.
Any thoughts? Abz 02:51, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
